MCQP 2012 Review

The Mother City Queer Party (MCQP) is an annual party event that attracts people from all over  Africa to The Mother City.  Known as the biggest gay party in Africa, it also very popular under straight party-goers.  This year's theme was Fairy Tale Fantasy.

The evening was one of the windiest nights in Cape Town, but it did not stop the patrons to line-up in their most extravagant and elaborate costumes. The party atmosphere was electric as we queued, waiting to be let into the biggest event in Cape Town.

I certainly went with the expectation of kissing a frog and hoping it would turn into a prince. We danced to various music genres located in the suites located across the four levels of the stadium.  Fairies where out in their dozens.  The night saw Red Riding Hood and the Big bad Wolf dancing the night away together, symbolising the essence of this event, to diminish and eradicate the negative stigma of the queer community. Since the inception in 1994 this event has become one of the biggest events on Cape Town calendar, attracting people of all walks: gay; lesbian; black; white; transgender, etc... no discrimination, just fun, fun, fun.

MCQP 2013 will see me again, as nothing will ever put a damp on the energy, magic, creativeness, friendliness and acceptance of the jovial patrons of this event.

MCQP was voted by Queerlife readers as South Africa's best LGBTI Event/Party in 2011 and has become part of Cape Town colourful history, celebrating South Africa's rich and vibrant constitution.
